THREE CARS, BUILDING TORCHED IN VRYGROND PROTEST


The city’s law enforcement unit says a man sustained minor burns and two women were roughed up by the crowd.

City of Cape Town Law Enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason says: “Attacks on private property have continued for a second successive night in Capricorn in Muizenberg. Protesters targeted the New World Foundation building, setting three vehicles alight and petrol bombing part of the building.”

On Sunday, a group of people attacked the city’s coastal park landfill site adjacent to Vrygrond, and two other businesses.

It’s understood the unrest began after shacks were destroyed by officials.

CAPE TOWN – Another night of violence gripped the Vrygrond and Capricorn areas on Monday night. Protesters torched a building and three vehicles.

Thami Mngqolo and Jo-Anne Reyneke release statement on split

The statement, posted on both of their social media pages over the weekend, details the split between the two.

“Some of you are already aware that we are have decided to go our separate ways. We have both sat down and agreed that is the right thing to do for all involved.”

Thami and Jo-Anne added in the statement that they “have decided to make this announcement to prevent any false speculations.”

An article published in Sunday World claim that the couple, who have been together for eight years, were engaged and Jo-anne had kicked Thami out after finding “a compromising video on his cellphone”.

Jo-anne has thanked the publication for the lies and has clarified that they have “never been engaged.

The couple shares two children together.

Pearl Modiadie cancels wedding with fiancé … again


The two were supposed to marry in a traditional wedding on Saturday in Tembisa, but that never happened despite sent out invitations, Sunday World reports.television and radio presenter Pearl Modiadie has pulled out her nuptials with businessman Nkululeko Buthelezi.

The tabloid quoted a source who said Pearl called the wedding off because of a “silly” fight with the businessman.

However, their fights may not be as silly because the source said Pearl felt restricted in their relationship and “always walked on eggshells” around the businessman.

Last year, the two called off their engagement, but later got back together.

The tabloid’s source however says this could be the last straw for the ‘Zaziwa Tv show’ presenter.

    • Suspended SARS head Tom Moyane actively tried to block investigations into possible corruption involving his second in command, Jonas Makwakwa, the disciplinary charge sheet against him has revealed. The presidency is taking disciplinary action against Moyane in a bid to clamp down on mismanagement at the revenue service. [BusinessLive]
    • Embattled auditor KPMG has welcomed a decision by the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors to review the group’s turnaround strategy, saying that the move will hopefully help to undo much of the negativity around auditors in general, which it contributed to through the recent scandals.     • There appears to be no end to the national bus strike, even as a new offer has been put on the table. The strike has been going on for over two weeks, and has crippled South Africa’s transport systems. The new offer is for a 8.75% increase in wages – unions demand at 12% increase. [EWN]
    • Gupta nephew, Varun, who was arrested as part of the February Hawks raid is reportedly trying to skip the country, despite court orders that say he can’t. He was release on R250,000 bail, and has now applied to try and get his pail conditions relaxed. [eNCA]
    • South Africa’s rand steadied against the dollar on Friday, failing to build on gains in the previous session, while stocks rose as bourse heavyweight Naspers  recovered ground. On Monday the rand was trading at R12.53 to the dollar, R16.98 to the pound and R14.99 to the euro.
