On how he has been able to bring the character of Sergeant Babeileon Skeem Saam to life, Manamela said the first thing he did after he landed the role was to conduct research.
“I did a lot of research about the police and the significant training officers get,” he said. “Police officers don’t behave like civilians; they need to carry themselves in a certain way to maintain the respect between them and civilians
It has also helped that he has a cousin who is a police officer, from whom he could draw inspiration. One of his other cousins also doubles up as his colleague, Harriet Manamela (who plays Meikie Maputla).
Speaking further about his background, Manamela said he was originally from the township of Seshego, Limpopo, before he moved to Johannesburg in 1991, in his early teens, to stay with his uncle.
After joining a community theater group and eventually graduating with a three-year diploma, his career started off with him working as a freelance artist.
