Who paid for Mama Joy’s VIP trip to watch the Springboks?

With Minister of Sport Gayton McKenzie halting sponsored superfan trips, many social media users are wondering who paid for Mama Joy to attend the Springboks’ last test match in Bloemfontein.

The sports supporter – real name Joy Chauke – has been bragging on her X account about her VIP treatment at the event.

The Boks beat Portugal 64-21 at the Toyota Stadium on Saturday, 20 July.

MAMA JOY BRAGS ABOUT THE BLOEM TRIP – WHO PAID FOR IT?
On her X account, Mama Joy revealed shared pics of her cheering on the Springboks from the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.

The superfan – who has recently come under fire by Gayton McKenzie – also revealed that she was staying at a five star hotel. In one clip, Chauke revealed hotel signage welcoming her to their establishment.

Another showed her revealed room service consisting of a glass of white wine, food, and snacks.

But who foot the bill, if not the Minister of Sport?

Mama Joy hinted that her VIP travel and accommodation were thanks to the SA sports supporter group, the Braai Army, and travel agent Dan Hooton.

She tweeted: “When I meet ⁦@BraaiArmy⁩ in Paris, I said to myself this is my home. I attended all their events. Today [I] am here at Bon Hotels with them. Taking care of everything, Dan, Major Danko.”

Chauke later shared a clip crediting herself as the “lucky charm” for the Springboks’ victory against Portugal.

‘I DON’T HAVE MILLIONS’
Speaking to eNCA, Mama Joy, ahead of the Springboks game, disputed claims that the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture has sponsored her trips to various sporting events.

Some of the statements can be misleading. For example, people think Mama Joy has spent R1.3 million, which makes me a millionaire.

Chauke claimed that the department sponsored her a trip to the Rugby World Cup in France.

“It was only the flights and the accommodation. I paid for the tickets to watch the games in Marseilles and Bordeaux.

She added to Newzroom Afrika: “I don’t care who says what. But people think I have money. People can rob me and take me to the ATM and tell me to take the money out – where will I get the money?”
