Several local celebrities have backed Chidimma Adetshina to win the Miss SA crown amid the social media controversy surrounding her ethnicity.
The 23-year-old model has come under fire after it was revealed that her parents had roots in other African countries.
Chidimma, however, is a South African citizen as she was born and raised in Johannesburg.
CELEBS BACK CHIDIMMA TO WIN MISS SA
Since revealing that her father is Nigerian and her mother is a South African with Mozambican roots, Chidimma Adetshina has been a trending topic on social media.
The model and LLB student has been the victim of xenophobic comments from angry pageant fans who believe she should not win or represent Miss SA.
However, several well-known names have backed the pageant “underdog” to take the crown.
DJ and music producer Prince Kaybee tweeted: “I want Chidimma to win so bad.”
Female rapper Rouge – who was born in South Africa to Congolese parents- posted: “Wishing this beauty all the best. I can’t imagine the pain of seeing all these painful messages daily. Keep your head up, mama.”
Meanwhile, former Johannesburg mayor Mpho Phalatse tweeted of Chidimma’s Miss SA dream: “I hope she makes it to the top. Such double standards.”
DIVORCED, MOTHER OF ONE
Apart from her African ancestry, Chidemma Adetshina has also shed light on her relationship status.
Speaking to The Sowetan, she said: “I got divorced in February. We were not compatible because he had this ideology of what an African married woman is. I didn’t want to be in a position where I couldn’t go out, but I had to clean and cook… that was just not for me because, as a society, we are way past that phase.

“My parents have been very supportive, and although my marriage robbed me of enjoying the beauty of pregnancy and being a wife, overall, it brings me joy that I get to take new steps with my son”.
Chidemma, who has now made it to the Top 13, continued: “I didn’t think I’d be a mom at my age as he was conceived out of wedlock, but I’m glad to have him. At the beginning of the year, I was so depressed and worried about how life was going to turn out for me, but getting this far in the competition made me believe there was more in store for me.”
