The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) has released a statement and joined South Africans in paying tribute to slaim DJ and MC, Peter “Mashata” Mabuse.
The soul music DJ was shot and killed in a hail of bullets in Soshanguve, northwest of Pretoria, in the early hours of Sunday, 21 April.
TUT PROVIDING SUPPORT FOR DJ MASHATA’S FAMILY
The higher learning institution said it was saddened by MASHATA’S passing.
“Mabuse, has been a loyal employee of TUT where he served as a Residence Advisor for both Pretoria and Ga-Rankuwa Campuses. His varied community engagement activities – e.g. as MC and as Stadium Announcer at Mamelodi Sundowns home matches – had a positive impact on society beyond the gates of the University.
The university said it was providing the Mabuse family, friends, colleagues and students with as much support as it can at this difficult time.
“The family should be afforded the space and the time to process their great loss, and to honour the memory of the deceased with dignity.
“The University calls upon the public, including the media, to exercise restraint and sensitivity towards the family at this time of grief.
“Our deepest condolences go to the Mabuse family, friends, colleagues and TUT students.”
MURDER AND ATTEMPTED MURDER DOCKETS OPENED
News of Mashata’s murder was confirmed to The South African by Gauteng police spokesperson Col Noxolo Kweza. She revealed that murder and attempted murder dockets have been opened.
“[The] shooting involved two men aged 46 and 45 years during the early hours of today [Sunday]. One victim died in hospital while the other was injured,” she said.
“The two victims were driving near TUT (Tshwane University of Technology) in Soshanguve when shots were fired at their vehicle. The suspects fled and police are following several leads.”

According to Epozini manager Vusi Mtshweni, Mashata arrived at the establishment on Saturday night for his set and minutes after he finished playing he left.
“He came with his friend, who is also his driver around 11pm and he performed. His set-up was good. He left after 12pm,” Mtshweni told SowetanLIVE.
“When I heard the news in the morning, I called his driver. The driver told me that the [incident] happened near TUT [Tshwane University of Technology, along Aubrey Matlala Street], which is about 3km to 5km from here. The driver said that he just heard bullets,” Mtshweni said.
