Singer Nathi Mankayi comes to priso ners’ aid

Well-known Afro-Pop singer Nathi Mankayi goes back to prison. This time, not as a prisoner but to help inmates improve their lives.

Nathi (41), who grew up in Maclear in the Eastern Cape and is currently planning his Silwa Nemimoya Picnic Tour, said his big dream is to see people in prison come out changed.

“I spent eight years in prison, and it was not nice. So, it’s my duty to make sure inmates get out and never come back. I’ll talk to them about my prison experience and how I stopped doing crime,” Nathi said.
In 2006, he was sentenced to eight years in prison for committing a robbery in 2002. He was also arrested in 2019 for a business robbery but escaped prison through mediation.

He said he was raised by a single mother and wanted to live a life he couldn’t afford.

That’s when he started hanging around with the wrong crowd, which landed him behind bars.

Nathi said he has learnt his lesson and wanted to help others.“I’ve been to prisons and spoken to inmates about the dangers of committing crime. I should keep visiting different prisons. I’m sure it’ll have a positive impact,” he said. After serving his sentence, Nathi came out and started making music.

In 2015, he released his debut album titled Buyelekhaya, which included hits such as Nomvula, Imibuzo and Noba Ngumama.

Speaking about the tour, which kicks off on Saturday, 22 June at the Botanic Gardens in Durban, Nathi said he named it Silwa Nemimoya because his song Imimoya caused such a stir.“I recorded Imimoya in 2022 as part of my album Usiba Lwegazi. Music fans love the song, that’s why I named the tour Silwa Nemimoya. The song is a mix of Afro-soul and gospel. I love the way it’s been received.”

Nathi revealed that his tour will continue until November.

“In each city I’m introduced by local artists. In KZN, I’ve brought maskandi singer Gatsheni (Khuzani Ndlovu) because I know maskandi is dominating in this province and Gatsheni is a big musician at the moment. I want everyone to be happy and satisfied,” he said.
The singer’s tour will also take place in Gqebegha on 19 October, Cape Town on 7 September, Bloemfontein on 21 September, Mthatha on 5 October, and Joburg on 9 November.

In addition to Gatsheni in Durban, Nathi will also perform at Naima Kay, The Soil, and Jumbo.

Department of Education responds to Skomota appearing in exam paper

The Department of Education has responded to the widespread controversy over the inclusion of social media influencer Skomota as an exam topic in a question paper that has been circulating on X (formerly Twitter).

Outrage Over Skomota’s Inclusion in Exam Paper
This week, a Life Orientation examination paper emerged with the popular Limpopo-born influencer – Thabang Sefala – as a case study. In the question paper, learners had to answer three questions about the dancer and get 10 marks if they answer correctly. However, critics argued that the inclusion of Skomota undermines the examination process as well as the value of academic excellence, especially because many do not see him as a positive influence. In many viral social media videos, Skomota is often seen drinking alcohol and touching and kissing women.

“It’s the assumption that all children know Skomota for me😏…….There are parents who would do anything to not expose their children to oSkomota because they realise that there is nothing to learn from his behaviour. The Department of Education needs to do better!” said one X user.

While another said: “Kids need to be taught financial literacy and other important things not to answer exam questions about Skomota like really?”

Department of Education Responds

Speaking to ZiMoja, National Department of Basic Education spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga, said that the authenticity of the examination paper is still in question. He claimed that the question in the examination paper could have been manipulated.

“DBE would not know if this were real or not because schools set their own exams for learners under grade 12. There are no national exams but internal exams which means a school could do something like this for their own purposes.” Mhlanga said.

“It could easily be a manipulated document.”

However, he promised to get to the bottom of the matter by taking it up with the other education departments in the nine provinces.

“I will, however, check with my colleagues from the provinces if they know anything about it,” added Mhlanga.

Quick one my loves, please refrain from tagging me in rubbish. By doing so,you bring unnecessary toxicity in to my life and in to my space.
I just celebrated my birthday with not only the loves of my life but with almost 200 less fortunate people who I provided warm cooked meals, school shoes, cake, snacks and blankets for on my birthday.
It was such a success that I’m doing it again on Saturday.
I’ve turned 32 and built a solid career, been blessed with a beautiful family, supportive friends and I get to live out my dreams every other day whilst I change a life or two in the process.
A while ago,I’d be going back and forth with the very scum who find joy in tarnishing reputations and brands with baseless lies.

I’d be stuck on trying to prove how untrue it is but at what cost?! For who???
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, body shame me all you want but leave my family out of it. And now? Do what ever makes you feel good about your own little miserable life whilst I save a few ❤️
Happy Thursday batho baka ❤️
