Simphiwe Majozi, the beloved Uzalo actor renowned for his portrayal of the charismatic yet troublesome hustler Sbu Makhathini, has embarked on a new entrepreneurial journey by opening Sbu&Ration’s Eatery in Newlands East, Durban.

Inspired by a Beloved Character
Majozi’s decision to dive into the restaurant business stems from his on-screen persona. Playing Sbu Makhathini has been more than just an acting role for Majozi—it has influenced his real-life aspirations. The actor shared that his character’s hustler spirit inspired him to turn a long-held passion into a business.

“Yes, the character that I’m playing now is what gave me the push to open the restaurant,” Majozi explained. “I asked myself that I used to sell food during my tertiary days in Pietermaritzburg, so why don’t I go back in that business and serve food to people like I used to do back in the days.”

A Passion Rooted in College Days
Majozi’s love for cooking dates back to his college years in Pietermaritzburg, where he ran a small food business to support his education. “I’ve always had a passion for cooking, so iKishi lam (My Kitchen) back in Pietermaritzburg helped me pay up my tertiary education fees because there was no money, and I had to do something in order for me to complete my studies,” Majozi recalled.

A Partnership for Success
Balancing the demands of his acting career with running a restaurant might seem daunting, but Majozi has partnered with a trusted friend, Cebolenkosi ‘Lacostaration’ Minange. Minange, who recently returned from Alaska, manages the day-to-day operations of Sbu&Ration’s Eatery when Majozi is occupied with his acting commitments.

Community Support and Humble Beginnings
Despite the challenges, Majozi is overwhelmed by the community’s support. “I just don’t know people flock into the business for food or because I’m a good actor, but I’m humbled with the support,” he said with a smile.

The opening of Sbu&Ration’s Eatery marks a significant milestone in Majozi’s journey. Transitioning from a beloved TV actor to a budding restaurateur, Majozi continues to inspire both fans and aspiring entrepreneurs with his versatility and determination.
