Nomvelo Makhanya, the South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) winning actress, has ventured into the music industry as a DJ. Best known for her role as Lindiwe in the popular TV show ‘Scandal!’, Makhanya has decided to explore her passion for music and rebrand herself as “Mvelo”.
The talented actress has been drawn to the music scene for some time, inspired by her experience working with DJ Black Coffee’s former record label, Soulistic. While in the studio, Makhanya discovered her love for DJing and began learning from various artists. Although shehas parted ways with Soulistic, her passion for music remains unwavering.
Makhanya’s music style is deeply rooted in Afrotech and Afrohouse, genres that resonate with her artistic vision. She believes that her music will be a source of healing for her audience, just as her acting has been. “The music inspires me, and it doesn’t matter whether I’m singing, acting, or DJing. I’m healing people through that,” she explained in an interview with TshisaLIVE.
The actress-turned-musician is set to release her debut single soon, which will give her fans a glimpse into her unique sound. Makhanya is eager to share her music with the world and is confident that her talent will transcend her acting career. “People should stay tuned to my social page for my soon-to-be-released single,” she teased.
Makhanya’s decision to pursue a career in music comes after a nine-year hiatus from acting. She played the iconic role of Lindiwe in ‘Scandal!’ and received widespread acclaim for her performance. However, she felt the need to “release the character” and take a break from acting to focus on her music.
During her acting hiatus, Makhanya received a SAFTA for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the Netflix feature film ‘I Am All Girls’. This achievement was a personal milestone for her, and she expressed gratitude to everyone who supported her craft. “This is it; this is our moment; this is our time! I’m eternally grateful. Little me is happy to have fulfilled my, our childhood dream,” she said in her acceptance speech.
