Mzansi Magic bids farewell to ‘Champions’

Popular telenovela Champions has not been renewed for a second season.

DStv confirms that the soccer telenovela, Champions which airs on Mzansi Magic has been cancelled.


 

Shirley Adonisi, who is director of local entertainment channels says: “Firstly, to our cast, Tshedza Pictures, sponsors and advertisers, thank you for your ongoing support for Champions. And for your efforts in entertaining our Mzansi Magic viewers.”

“Mzansi Magic plays a pivotal role in entertaining viewers during prime time. And we continue to keep up with the latest television trends. We are currently in the development of several new show concepts not limited to telenovelas and fine-tuning our key returning shows to ensure that Mzansi Magic’s prime-time 2025 slots are well received,” she concluded.

The channel confirms that the last episode will broadcast on 31 January 2025 with production for the season having concluded last month.l.

The show stars are Jo-anne Reynecke, Sello Maake ka-Ncube, Tumisho Masha, Kwenzo Ngcobo and Kgomotso Christopher.

It also stars Keitu Sankola, Thato Dithebe, Minki Malatji, Rethabile Mohapi, Thabo Malema and features many more talented cast members.

‘CHAMPIONS’: LOW VIEWS
The Tshedza Pictures show Champions failed to impress South Africans when it premiered early this year after the ending of the The River.

The Broadcasting Research Council of South Africa (BRCSA) February 2024 figures revealed that the show received less than 300 000 views as it didn’t appear in the DStv top 30 shows.

TVSA reports that the soccer telenovela received less than 400 000 views on DStv in June as it doesn’t appear in top 30 shows.

The channel adds that Champions viewers can expect more exciting cameo appearances, a continuation of jaw dropping and surprising storylines for the next six months.
