Gayton McKenzie asks ‘Generations’ star Abigal Khubeka to retire

Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie recently asked singer Abigail Khubeka to hang up her microphone at her tribute show.

eNCA reports that a tribute show was held for the legendary songbird and Generations: The Legacy actress, Abigail Khubeka on Saturday, 17 August at Joburg Theatre.


 

The event was to honour her life and her career spanning over five decades. The 84-year-old songwriter is celebrating 67-years in the music industry.

Musicians’ such as Lira, Brenda Mtambo, Mdu Masilela, Trompies, Judy Page, Mara Louw, and Simmy performed at the ceremony. While award-winning actress Lerato Mvelase was the master of ceremonies.

Legendary TV host Felicia Mabuza-Suttle also congratulated the iconic singer and said: “You have been there for South Africa since the 50s, thanks for being my mentor in show business.”

GAYTON MCKENZIE OFFERS TO FUND SINGER’S RETIREMENT
Zimoja reveals that Gayton McKenzie says South Africa owes the veteran actress and singer, Abigail Khubeka for her contribution.

McKenzie reportedly asked Khubeka to retire and offered to fund her retirement.

“We need to take care of our stars,’ he said, before offering to fund her retirement. We owe her a lot for her contribution, and it is only fair we that we allow her to retire and rest,’ the Minister said.

McKenzie’s offer comes after Connie Chiume’s son revealed at her funeral on Thursday, 15 August that his mother was exploited.

He said at the age of 70, Chiume was required to work 16 hours a day.
