Dawn Thandeka King chases the money with new business

Popular South African actress Dawn Thandeka King has turned her crocheting hobby into a business, called Izandla by Dawn Thandeka King.

She has starred on a number of drama series in the past two decades, including SABC’s Uzalo, Mzansi Magic’s Diep City, and now she’s on etv’s Isitha.

Speaking to the publication through brand manager Lorraine Sibanda from Izandla, she explains what prompted her to venture into the crocheting business.“Set life can be very hectic in our industry and often when you have downtime you want to read, catch up on your favourite soapies or just relax and spend time with family. Sometimes I make hats and other accessories to keep myself busy on set. With time my colleagues wanted to place orders for what I was making”.

“That soon had me busy and gave me an opportunity to bring other women on board to assist with meeting the demand. In 2022 I registered the business and identified that IZANDLA by Dawn Thandeka King was able to fill a gap in the market for handmade products. Due to how the brand was received by strangers, colleagues as well as friends, I wanted to tap into creating an additional income stream that is more sustainable and also scalable.”The award-winning actress says she has been crocheting since she was eight or nine years old. Because the craft was also one of her subjects at school she soon found herself enjoying it .

“So, it has been more than 30 years that I have had this skill. It’s relaxing, calming and also enhances one’s focus levels. Plus I just love doing it”, she said.

Dawn added that her products and business have been well-received by customers.“Izandla by Dawn Thandeka King is a great business which has a potential to grow big and also help sustain not only my life but also the ladies who crotchet with us. Ultimately it is to build a brand that will cross the border and be recognised globally.”.

The hats range from three collections with prices starting from R250 to R550. They are using PAXI as their preferred method of delivery.

Dawn told the publication that the collection is inspired by ordinary South Africans. “What we have launched is a summer collection that is made just in time for everyone’s favourite season of the year.”
