‘I lied’ to doctors: ‘Muvhango’ star Cynthia Shange on losing 5 toes instead of leg

Legendary model and actress Cynthia Shange who’s known for her role in Muvhango reveals how she dodged a leg amputation.


 

WHY CYNTHIA SHANGE LIED ABOUT A CONTRACT
Sunday World reports that the Muvhango actress and model Cynthia Shange revealed at the Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film and Television awards on Saturday, 20 July that she lost five toes.

Shange, who received a Lifetime Achievement at the ceremony added she was hospitalised in 2018 after experiencing complications with diabetes.

“I could have accepted this award being accompanied by someone with a wheelchair, but I am grateful for God’s mercy. I had complications which left me hospitalised for three months. It was hard and I was in between life and death,” said Shange.

When the doctors told the actress that her one leg needed to be amputated, she refused and told doctors that she was filming a movie.

“I lied and told them I had signed a contract which I could not breach and if I were to breach it, I would have to pay R5 Million. They called my daughter to come sign forms so I could get some antibiotics. My leg was getting worse by the day and after taking these antibiotics the complications got worse.”

The award-winning actress adds that she underwent four operations, was lucky not to come back without a leg and lost five toes to gangrene.

HER ROLE IN ‘MUVHANGO’
The 75-year-old, Cythia Shange, who is renowned for being the first black Miss South Africa is also known for her acting roles in Shaka Zulu and Muvhango.

She played the role of Thandaza’s mother (Sindi Dlathu) MaNkosi Buthelezi on the SABC2 soapie. Bona reports that she has also starred in u’Deliwe, Isivumelwano and Inkedama.

The legendary actress is also mother of four to Banele, Sihle, Archie and popular media personality, Nonhle Thema.
