Zenani Kraai: From Langa’s blue turf to the Paris Olympics

Zenani Kraai, a talented hockey player from Langa, is set to make his Olympic debut in Paris. This milestone marks a significant achievement for Kraai, who has overcome numerous challenges to reach this point.

ZENANI KRAAI’S OLYMPIC DREAM

Kraai received the life-changing news while at home with his family. “A dream come true,” he recalled.

“I remember feeling happy, and my family was just really happy and congratulated me.

They told me to just play my game and that it was my hard work that got me here.”

Kraai has played a crucial role in the South African Men’s Hockey team, according to Good Things Guy.

The team secured their Olympic qualification by defeating Egypt 2-1 in the final last November.

More recently, they beat Pakistan 4-3 in the bronze medal playoff at the FIH Nations Cup in Poland.

These victories have been vital in preparing the team for the Olympics.

With 18 Caps for the men’s team, Kraai reminisced about his first Cap at the Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia in November 2022, according to the International Hockey Federation.

ZENANI KRAAI AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROJECTS
“I remember crying the first time I sang the national anthem,” he said. This highlighted his deep pride and emotional connection to his country.

Kraai’s introduction to hockey came through community outreach projects.

Initially a football player like many children in Langa, a friend’s invitation to a hockey clinic changed his path.

“I eventually found myself skipping football sessions to play hockey,” he explained.

“And eventually, hockey was the only sport I was playing.”

COMMUNITY SPORTS PROGRAMMES
Currently playing for Langa Hockey Club, Kraai has represented both his province and country at various levels.

Zenani Kraai emphasised the importance of accessible community sports programmes.

This is especially important in areas like Langa where they are more available compared to other townships.

“These programmes showed me that success was possible in my situation,” he noted.

Kraai’s journey has not been easy. Growing up in Langa, he faced social and economic challenges.

He missed birthdays, milestones, and family occasions to train and attend national team camps.

REFLECTING ON HARD WORK
During difficult times, he leaned on his family and coach for support.

“Am I ever going to make it where I see myself?” he often wondered. But their encouragement kept him going.

His self-resilience also played a key role.

“Things won’t stay like this, someday it will change,” he would remind himself.

He believed that hard work would eventually pay off. “Don’t cheat yourself. Put in the hours and the selections and results will reflect your hard work.”

ZENANI KRAAI AND THE OLYMPICS
For Kraai, success is not just about personal achievements.

“If I can inspire others through the way I have walked, or to walk a better path… not the achievements but to be an example to those who look like and have lived a life like mine, then I’ve found success,” he said.

Looking ahead to the Olympics, Kraai aims to contribute to his team’s success, according to SA Hockey.

“The team culture brings people from different walks of life together,” he explained.

“If we all have the same goal and stick together, we will be able to tackle anything that comes our way.”

DEDICATION AND RESILIENCE
When asked for advice to aspiring Olympians, Kraai shared, “Keep showing up, despite it raining, you’re not feeling good, whatever’s going on.

Because when you show up and put the time in, all the excuses flush away. So get there, play hockey, enjoy and express yourself.”

Kraai’s journey is a testament to his dedication and resilience.

As he prepares for the Olympics, his story continues to inspire.
