The divorce between former model Sonia Booth and her estranged husband Matthew Booth is taking forever to be finalised. It’s said that the delay is being caused by the soccer legend’s pending banking statements which are required by the high court.
In November 2022, Sonia accused the soccer legend of having an affair with trainer Bongani Mthombeni-Moller since Valentine’s Day of that year. Sonia detailed the alleged affair in a string of Instagram posts. Booth filed for divorce a few days later after her social media posts while his alleged lover,Mthombeni-Moller, also filed for divorce from her UCT Professor husband and is now a divorcee.
I was horrified when Sonia told me of many other women, especially around 2012 when he was living at their Cape Town property while he was playing for Ajax Cape Town. She stayed behind in Johannesburg because she didn’t want to uproot their eldest son in the middle of a school year,” the source said. The source added that Sonia also discovered in 2022 that Booth allegedly cheated with yet another woman, not Mthombeni-Möller, but a woman named Gloria.
According to a source close to the estranged couple, Sonia wants the divorce concluded soon because the legal matters are eating away at their joint estate, and she feels that this is money that could go towards their son’s education. According to the source, Sonia launched a court application in May 2023 to compel Booth to submit financial statements and she won with costs. “Booth appealed the court’s decision but later decided to withdraw the appeal. Now he is stalling the process and he risks another approach of the courts by Sonia to file a motion of contempt of court,” the source said, adding that the danger Sonia faces is that of her wellbeing and mental health even though she tries to act strong.
The only thing I can think of as a concerned friend is Sonia’s wellbeing given how unnecessary the delays are. The divorce could’ve been finalised months ago had the legend submitted financial statements as ordered by the court. Now Sonia knows Booth is hiding a lot more. Why else would he make excuses about submitting the other two-year bank statements the court ordered him to submit?” Called for a comment, Sonia said,” I don’t want to comment on an ongoing legal matter, especially considering it is an unnecessary costly exercise eating away at our joint estate. I wish for the decree to be granted as in yesterday so I can close this chapter of my life and move on,” Booth ignored our calls and Whatsapp messages.
