Actor Menzi Biyela embarks on a music journey

Well-known South African actor Menzi Biyela has officially entered the music scene. Best known for his roles in hit TV shows like Uzalo, Rhythm City, Ifalakhe, and most recently as Mbongeni in Mzansi Magic’s new telenovela iThonga, Menzi is now embracing a new creative challenge: music.

Menzi recently formed a band called TheNewSoundOfSA alongside rising talents Zakwethu and Tzeny. The trio has already performed together at several events, and Menzi is now preparing to take the stage as a solo artist at the upcoming Siyanqoba Music Festival in Pinetown.

“I’m taking a bold step and it’s great that I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “As a solo artist, I’ll have the freedom to explore my own sound and style without compromise. It’s exciting, even though it comes with its own challenges.”

Balancing Acting and Music
Despite the musical pivot, Menzi remains committed to acting. He expressed how fulfilling it has been to step into the complex role of Mbongeni in iThonga.

“Acting can be challenging but rewarding,” Menzi shared. “It’s wonderful that I’m connecting with the character. As I continue to grow into the role, I’m learning and discovering new dimensions of Mbongeni and the story.”

The festival will also be an opportunity for him to interact with fans of iThonga and gauge their response to his portrayal.
