Gqeberha: The Empire actors might be left jobless

More than 30 cast and crew members might be left jobless after the alleged possibility of Gqeberha:The Empire being canned. The telenovela which is wrapping its production at the end of this month is said not to be making a comeback and actors are biting their nails in anticipation, waiting for the announcement.

UNCERTAINTY

An actor on the show tells ZiMoja that their futures lie in the hands of Tshedza Pictures, the production company responsible for the drama series. “Asazi (we don’t know, we doubt the show is returning. Season two was forced because of the negative publicity it got. They brought it back to try and prove a point, but now the ratings have not been amazing,’ she says. “We have not been updated on the contracts,” the source said.

MOVING ON

The show started on a slippery slope but managed to gain a few numbers, and bagged season two. It made history as the first isiXhosa telenovela shot in the Eastern Cape and unearthed new and fresh talent from the province. But the show is now hanging on by a thread with an average of around 400k viewers and peaked at 580k in May. When they started, actors complained about the ill-treatment, low pay, and sketchy living conditions. “We didn’t do well in all honesty. But the show had a great run. It’s now back to us having to find work. We won’t blame the production. These things happen. That is the nature of the business I am afraid.’ CEO of General Entertainment at MultiChoice Group, Nomsa Piliso says the channel still needs to decide. “We have not made a call as yet on whether or not we will return for season three, but an announcement will be made after the decision.”

Shebeshxt’s Family Announces Onthatile’s Funeral Details

The family of the renowned superstar Lehlogonolo Chauke, affectionately known as Shebeshxt, has announced the funeral details for his late daughter, Onthatile Gladys Chuene.

Onthatile will be laid to rest on Saturday, 22 June 2024, at Lebowakgomo, just outside Polokwane. The young Northern Academy learner tragically lost her life in a car accident on the R37 road outside Polokwane last week, an incident that also left her parents injured.

In the aftermath of the accident, Shebeshxt’s lawyer, Lot Ramusi, recounted the immediate steps taken to secure medical assistance. Ramusi revealed that he had to call on prominent political figures, including EFF Commander in Chief Julius Malema and the Mayor of Polokwane John Mpe, to intervene after facing difficulties in getting adequate care at Polokwane Provincial Hospital.

Thanks to the intervention of Malema and Mpe, Shebeshxt was transferred and is now receiving treatment at a private hospital. The family is deeply grateful for the support extended during this challenging time.

As the community mourns the loss of Onthatile, the family has requested privacy to grieve and prepare for the upcoming funeral service.

Mourners, family, and friends will gather at Lebowakgomo, Limpopo, to pay their final respects to Onthatile and support the artist during this difficult time.

This comes after the nine-year-old tragically died in a car accident on 8 June en route to Lebowakgomo with her parents, Shebeshxt and Kholofelo Moloto.

The accident left the rapper with bruises, internal bleeding and an injured foot.

However, the family spokesman Lot Ramusi had previously assured Daily Sun that his foot is intact now.

“He had dislocations. On one leg, they put steel in and fitted a moon boot. The leg is OK. He can step with both legs,” he said. Onthatile Chuene will be laid to rest today. Photo by Nhlanhla Khomola

Ramusi said they hoped Shebeshxt would be able to attend his daughter’s funeral.

He said the musician is out of the ICU and recovering in a general ward.

“He was in ICU for about five days. He’s out of the ICU and much better. We’re waiting for the doctor’s confirmation so that they can make arrangements for him to attend the funeral,” Ramusi said.Onthatile Chuene will be laid to rest today. Photo by Nhlanhla Khomola

Shebeshxt’s mother, Mpho Chauke, said this is a difficult time for the family.

Speaking fondly of her granddaughter, Mpho recalled how she named the grandchild immediately after birth.

“I named her Onthatile, meaning God loves me. She was an apple of my eye. We used to share everything. She was so intelligent, always active and a lovely person. I’m shattered,” she said.

Musician Lehlogonolo “Shebeshxt” Chauke will be able to attend his daughter’s funeral on Saturday following special arrangements with the hospital where he is being treated.

Family spokesperson and the musician’s lawyer, Lot Ramusi, confirmed the matter to Sunday World. He said that the family has requested Shebeshxt’s medical team to release him from the hospital on Saturday. This so that he can attend his daughter’s funeral. He will return to the medical institution after the ceremony.

Shebeshxt survived a fatal car accident in Limpopo on Saturday night. The accident claimed the life of his nine-year-old daughter Onthatile.

No longer in a critical condition
Ramusi said the singer is no longer in critical care and has been moved from the hospital’s intensive care unit.

“He is out of the ICU and has a moonboot on his leg. Shebeshxt is recovering quite well. He can talk, and he can actually even stand up. His focus is just on his recovery.”

Shebeshxt was traveling to his girlfriend’s home, where he was going to drop her and his daughter off. He was then going to make his way to an ANC Siyanqoba rally celebration concert in Lebowakgomo. That was when the musician’s car collided with a truck.

Ramusi said the family will make arrangements with the hospital for the musician to be at the funeral.

“We are going to make arrangements with the hospital. For them to take him there and bring him back after the funeral,” he said.

Ramusi could not reveal if the funeral would be private or public. This follows an outpouring of public support from the musician’s fans.

Police reached out to musician as part of investigations

He also said that the police have reached out to the musician to get a J88 form. The form determines the extent of his injuries. This in order to investigate the driver of the truck his vehicle collided with.

Ramusi said police also reached out to the musician for statements. But they have not said they were investigating him for his daughter’s passing.

“He will only give them that statement next week after the funeral,” he said.
