Pebetsi Matlaila, known for her role in the popular TV show Skeem Saam, recently opened up about her terrifying childbirth experience, leaving her followers emotional and deeply moved. The actress shared vivid memories from nine months ago when she and her daughter, Qhawekazi, faced a life-and-death situation in the ICU.
Matlaila, who had a challenging pregnancy, was diagnosed with preeclampsia, a condition marked by dangerously high blood pressure. As she headed to the operating room, she struggled to breathe, and then everything went black. When she regained consciousness, doctors informed her that she had been clinically dead for three minutes. Her daughter, born with a lack of oxygen and appearing blue, was also in critical condition.
Matlaila described the severity of her situation, saying, “I am told my heart and lungs collapsed after I had fits (where I almost bit off my tongue) due to the high blood pressure (Preeclampsia).” Both mother and daughter spent a month in the ICU, and Matlaila attributes their survival to divine intervention.
A Miraculous Recovery
Even the medical team was astounded by their recovery. Matlaila emphasized, “To this day, doctors still reiterate that our story is one in a million. A true miracle!” She expressed immense gratitude to the medical professionals who played a crucial role in their recovery, referring to them as her “Angels.” She praised their expertise and dedication to saving lives, acknowledging their immediate and hands-on support during their critical time.
Facing Additional Challenges
Adding to the harrowing childbirth experience, Matlaila revealed another life-threatening incident during her pregnancy. She was involved in a car accident while trying to escape hijackers. Reflecting on this ordeal, she expressed disbelief at her survival, considering the high risks associated with her preeclampsia diagnosis.
Embracing a Second Chance at Life
As Matlaila navigates the aftermath of these traumatic events, she has developed a deep appreciation for her renewed lease on life. She acknowledged the various health risks, the car accident, battles with depression and anxiety, and the intensely challenging childbirth experience.
