Ukhozi FM radio personality, author, and entrepreneur Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule, who was also the founder of the Crown Gospel Music Awards, passed away on Monday, 12 August, at Parklands Hospital. She was 53 years old and had been battling lung cancer since her diagnosis in May of this year.
Mbokazi, a beloved figure in the media and gospel music industry, had been keeping her followers updated on her health journey through social media. Her last post, shared on 26 July, has resurfaced in the wake of her passing, offering a glimpse into her difficult battle with cancer.
In the heartfelt post, Mbokazi candidly shared the emotional toll of her illness. “Let me confess. Let’s get real for a moment. I have encouraged people all my life, and my trust in God is unshakable. But it is hard to encourage yourself,” she wrote. She spoke of the challenges she faced, admitting that there were days when she felt exhausted and unmotivated, and even simple messages of encouragement from loved ones felt overwhelming. “Thank God for professional and spiritual help. Please, if you experience the above, seek help. It is okay to not be okay! It’s hard,” she urged her followers.
Mbokazi’s cancer journey became public in May when she lost her voice immediately after hosting her gospel morning show, Eshilo, which aired every Sunday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Following this, she was hospitalized and had been in and out of the hospital ever since.
Her passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences and tributes from fans, colleagues, and gospel artists. Radio personality and motivational speaker Abongile Mangala expressed his sorrow, recalling how open and vulnerable Mbokazi had been during an interview with him on TruFM. “Oh, what a loss. I remember hosting her on TruFM, and she was so vulnerable and open with me. Rest in peace, mama. May God strengthen your family and close friends during this difficult time,” he said.
Gospel artist Jumbo Nyangiwe also paid tribute to Mbokazi on Facebook, acknowledging her significant role in helping artists pursue their dreams. “Thank you so much for loving us and dedicating yourself to helping us build our future as artists and for making our dreams come true,” he wrote.
Philanthropist BI Phakathi described Mbokazi as a visionary leader and a woman of purpose who changed many lives. “She changed so many lives, including mine. To my mother, we are grateful for your impact on this generation. It’s so painful to lose her. Rest in God’s hands, mama,” he wrote on X.
