Captain to Captain: Siya Kolisi meets Virgil van Dyk

Springboks captain has likely ticked an exciting experience off his bucket list after he got to meet Virgil van Dyk, the captain of his favourite football club, Liverpool.

The rugby player has posted up a storm of his adventures at Anfield, where he was given a warm welcome this week.

Siya – who is on a mandatory Boks break – is currently with the Sharks abroad. On Saturday, 25 January, the Durban-based club played Cardiff Rugby in Wales, who they beat 42 -22.

In his latest Instagram post, Siya Kolisi shared a look at his time visiting Anfield, the home of Liverpool.

The Springboks and Sharks player was welcomed onto the pitch by none other than captain Virgil van Dyk. Joining him was fellow Bok Ox Nche, who also sat at the recent Sharks game.

The beaming skipper grinned for the camera as he got to meet van Dyk, who made his 300th appearance for the English club this weekend.

Siya shared: “My bro and our captain, thank you so much for making our visit to Anfield special and unforgettable. Honestly inspired by your leadership on and off the pitch.

He added: “You are a remarkable ambassador for Liverpool and for the sport as a whole.”

In the comment section, Virgil left a heart emoji. He also reposted Siya’s post to his IG Stories.

Siya Kolisi is a longtime Liverpool fan. After the Springboks won the Rugby World Cup in 2019, Siya had the opportunity to watch his team live in Anfield for the first time.

He said of the occasion: “I get inspired by the players and what they do. What we did last year, to come back against a team like Barcelona from 3-0 down, nobody expected it.

“To see the boys fight like that and not concede a single goal. Mohamed Salah was wearing the jersey, saying you must believe [Never Give Up] and that kind of stuff, you can’t buy that.

“And that’s what motivates us in other sports as well.”

CENTRAL CEE AND COLE PALMER TOO
Despite being on mandatory rest, Siya Kolisi had a busy week, where he mingled with plenty of high-profile people.

The Springbok had the chance to meet Princess Charlene of Monaco for a royal high tea. He also met Chelsea player Cole Palmer and UK rapper Central Cee after the club’s football match against Wolves.
