Actress Angela Sithole – who is renowned for her roles in TV shows like The Queen, In The Dock, and Zabalaza – stars as Winnie in the new action-packed Showmax Original Empini, alongside Siyabonga Thwala and Nambitha Ben-Mazwi.
ANGELA SITHOLE ON WORKING WITH SIYABONGA THWALA IN ‘EMPINI’
Speaking about her character, Sithole shared that she loves that Winnie Bhodoza is a strong character and there’s depth that goes into her.
“There are a lot of internal struggles she faces in order to keep the family together, which is what drew me to her in the first place. She’s indeed an interesting character,” the actress said.
Winnie is the wife of Khaya Bhodoza (played by Siyabonga Thwala).
Describing the dynamics between her character and Thwala’s, Sithole said: “It’s lovely! They have built this empire together for so many years. They have a beautiful family – two kids together. Every relationship has its ups and downs but they love each other deeply. It’s also so beautiful to see a black couple just genuinely love each other like that with no infidelity. Well, for now.”
She also said working with the former Isibaya award-winning actor has been amazing.
“We always laugh every day on set. He’s an amazing person to work with, he has an amazing energy. It’s my first time working with him and we have such great chemistry.”
‘WINNIE IS VERY CHARMING’
Sithole describes her character as a very strong character who will do everything to ensure that the Bhodoza name remains clean in the public eye. She further describes her as very charming, persuasive, and does what she needs to in order to get her way.
The actress said her Empini character is different because she doesn’t have any ulterior motives.
“Whereas the characters I’ve played in the past were like that, they are quite weird – they do bad things to get their way. But I think Winnie is very charming and poised in the way she carries herself. Even myself, I take from that and I’m like damn, I can learn something from her, ” she added.
As a parent, Winnie loves her kids equally, even though the last born would always have a little bit more love.
“I see that with my mother too, she definitely gives a little bit more care to the last born. It’s just the love that a mother usually has for her last born. It’s just natural and we grow to understand that. Especially because he is a boy, she will be softer to him as compared to the daughter. She will give more tough love to her because she knows how the world is just being a female,” Sithole said.
